Subject: Assignment
By the time you get through with these three initial
postings, you should be very comfortable with WEBCT and
the rest of the semester should be a breeze. I am
curious. You by now will have noticed that you are
required to take at least two interdisciplinary courses
in your career here at GC&SU and many of you may take
more than two IDST courses. Have you heard the word
"interdisciplinary" before? What does this word mean to
you? What would you expect an "interdisciplinary course"
to be?

A interdisciplinary course to me is a course that
gives you more than one view on a certain topic to open
up your mind. I think that it involves more than one
basic topic. Since this is just my second semister
here, I have not taken any more than two IDST classes.
But the one that I was involved in last semister really
opened my eyes to a new way of looking at many different
subjects. So in the future I do plan to take a few more
IDST courses.

I feel that an interdisciplinary course is a course that
is taught to open students up to a different type of
culture. The purpose is to introduce students to
subjects that are not neccessarily related to their
major, but that may be handy in the future. I feel that
an interdisciplinary class should be informative as well
as fun for the student. The class should not be so
demanding that the student is so busy trying to complete
the work that he/she does not have time to enjoy the
class and get something out of it.

An interdisciplinary class is one that offers mant views
and opinions on certain subjects. There will be many
individuals that will voice different opinions and that
is encouraged in these types of classes. A major
objective of interdisciplinary classes is to teach you
that its ok to have a different view from others, but
you should remain open to their views as well

"What is an Interdisciplinary Class?"

GC&SU is a very special universty in Georgia, being the
only public liberal arts university in the state. The
interdisciplinary classes that we are required to take
and often choose to take reflect the individuality of
our school. I am a sophomore at GC&SU and have taken
more than the required two IDST classes. Each one of
these classes has opened my eyes to different
perspectives of each subject I have studied. They teach
you to be more open and more accepting of all views and
opinions on a subject. Classes like these are what make
Georgia College and State University so different from
other universities in Georgia.

Subject: re: Assignment
The dictionary defines "interdisciplinary" as an
adjective referring to something involving two or more
academic disciplines. The mission of a liberal arts
school is to intertwine the different disciplines so we
have many different lenses through which to view the
world. We are not simply being trained to do one
specific job and that's it. It means that we are being
taught how to think. I think that interdisciplinary
courses are meant to help us think "out of the box."
These classes should teach us how to approach a problem
from a different angle or look at the world in a
different and hopefully broader perspective, therefore
bringing more to our chosen occupation.

Interdisciplinary classes are ones in which makes you
aware of issues and subjects you would not otherwise
experience. IDST classes are part of the core
curriculum at Georgia College to help further the
students intellect and awareness of the world. IDST
classes are an essential part of a liberal arts
education, they encourage free thought and analytical
thinking.

I think that an interdisciplinary class is one that
combines more than one main topic, such as art and
different cultures. Because GC&SU is a liberal arts
school it offers many interdisciplinary courses. This
gives student who are not quiet sure yet as to what they
want to major in. These classes give you an oppertunity
to experience many different types of classes in a
somewhat shorter period of time.

An IDST is a type of course that combines many different
types of studies such as history, language, sociology
and music. This enables students a well rounded and
complete view of their surronding world. Although GC&SU
only requires students to take two IDST classes, many
wish, and should, take more of these type classes
because of the experiences and knowledge gained.

I believe a interdisciplinary class is where we the
student do most of the work individually and
independantly. I will enjoy this class and look for
forward to the challenge of working on my own.

An interdiciplinary class allows you to recieve a well
rounded education. Take me for example, I am a nursing
major, bur insted of taking only nursing classes I am
taking classes that don't have anything to do with my
major. These classes do allow me to broden my mind.

By nature, an interdisciplinary class should be one that
incompasses all areas of human knowledge: sciences,
visual arts, musical arts, as well as literature. In
essence, it is a feeblely modern attempt to reestablish
the classical education and still give it a pragmatic
feel since the vast majority of educators still have not
come to realize the value of a classical education that
treats the learner as though he has the capacity to
learn more than that which will simply make him an
effective tool in the machinery of society. *Shrug*
maybe we'll eventually just go back to a classical
system of education that was destroyed over 200 years
ago in this country.

Subject: What an interdisciplinary class is
An interdisciplinary class is a class that is
established in order to give students a sense of culture
and the chance to learn things that are not necessarily
something that is related to their major, but will be
helpful to know in life. I feel that an
interdisciplinary class should both informative and fun
at the same time. I don't feel that the class should
require so much work that the student is swamped with
trying to complete the work and does not have the
opportunity to actually enjoy the class and learn
something from it.

An Interdiscplinary class is a class that is formed to
give students the ability to examine a topic in more
that just one perspective. An Interdisciplinary class
lets the student see all aspects of a topic and does not
limit their perspective on the topic.

An interdisciplinary class is a class that combines
several areas of study, such as history and art.
Interdisciplinary classes teach students to think
differently than most classes because they allow
students to think on their own and form their own
opinions about important issues or subjects.

The first introduction to class was a good one. I think
that I will enjoy this class and really be enlightend by
taking it. I strongly like the online work and the
online services that are available. My expectations for
this course are to learn more about art and try to
understand it.

I think that an Interdisciplinary class is a class that
broadens your view on a certain subject. I think that an
IDST class will help me to open my mind and think about
things from a new aspect. I use to look at art as just
something someone else likes to do, but I think this
IDST class will help me broaden my view of art.

I think that IDST classes are suppose to broaden
every students horizon in art and history. I think it is
to incorporate different cultures art into our way of
thinking as Liberal Arts students. IDST classes give
students a breath of much needed freash air in thier
course load.

To me, an interdisciplinary class is one that teaches

Interdisciplinary classes are classes that are required
for students to take in order to finish their core
circulum in order to graduate. According to the
definition in the Georgia College Handbook,
interdisciplinary classes foster the goals of a liberal
arts education, as it promotes mastery of many
disciplinary perspectives, a greater appreciation of the
differences and similarities between the disciplines,
and the integration of these diverse perspectives into a
more holistic framework. These kind of classes are
here to help the student prepare for a variety of
different careers which require a lot of knowledge and
problem-solving skills.

An interdisciplinary class is serveral classes
interacting with each other as to the relationship to
one another. I am discovering in Art you can be talking
about music, math, history and other related subjects to
the Arts and vice versa in other classes. I see the
relativity.

IDST classes are very diverse and broad in there subject
matter. This is a liberal arts college so the idst
classes are here to expand our views.

An interdisciplinary class is a class that blends the
concepts of other areas of study in the university. As a
part of the liberal arts mission, GC&SU is trying to
create more well rounded, and cultured students. These
classes are important for a few reasons.... 1. They
supplement the learning that happens in the core
classes. For example - I've taken Music History, which
has been supplemented already by this course. 2. The
IDST classes show the relationships between areas of
study. Right now, for example - I'm combining my
knowledge of Music, History, and art. Other IDST classes
combine different areas.
