07.148 YUSUFALI: The people of Moses made, in his
absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for
worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it
could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They
took it for worship and they did wrong.

04.51 PICKTHAL: Hast thou not seen those unto whom a
portion of the Scripture hath been given, how they
believe in idols and false deities, and how they say of
those (idolaters) who disbelieve: "These are more
rightly guided than those who believe"?

004.076 PICKTHAL: Those who believe do battle for the
cause of Allah; and those who disbelieve do battle for
the cause of idols. So fight the minions of the devil.
Lo! the devil's strategy is ever weak.

005.003 PICKTHAL: Forbidden unto you (for food) are
carrion and blood and swineflesh, and that which hath
been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the
strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead
through falling from a height, and that which hath been
killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of
wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the
death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto
idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye swear by the
divining arrows. This is an abomination. This day are
those who disbelieve in despair of (ever harming) your
religion; so fear them not, fear Me! This day have I
perfected your religion for you and completed My favour
unto you, and have chosen for you as religion al-Islam.
Whoso is forced by hunger, not by will, to sin: (for
him) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

006.074 YUSUFALI: Lo! Abraham said to his father Azar:
"Takest thou idols for gods? For I see thee and thy
people in manifest error."

The previous portions of the Qur'an tell us a lot
about how the religion of Islam views idolatry. Along
with Judaism and Christianity, it holds that there is
only one true God and that the worship of any other gods
is sinful. These verses tell us that those other idols
are from the devil, and believers are not even to eat
meat that has been slaughtered in sacrifice to idols.
Much of this is very similar to the christian Old
Testament. In the story of Moses and the Israelites who
worship the golden calf, we are told that "they did
wrong." Abraham tells his father that he is graely in
error when he worships idols. The Qur'an even goes so
far as to say that worship of anything other than Allah
is fighting for the devil. This shows how they feel
about respecting the supremacy of Allah. It is obvious
that not placing anything above God is very important to
the Islamic religion.

or stallion-camels freed frim work: It is blasphemers
who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack
wisdom.

021.057 Yusufali: "And by Allah, I have a plan for your
idols- after ye go away and turn your backs"

021.065 Yusufali: Then were they confounded with shame:
"Thou knowest full well that these(idols) do not speak!"

029.017 Yusufali: "For ye do worship idols besides
Allah, and ye invent falsehood. The things that ye
worshop besides Allah have no power to give you
sustenance: then seek ye sustenance from Allah, serve
Him, and be grateful to Him: to Him will be your
return."

029.025 Yusufali: And he said: "For ye have taken idols
besides Allah, out of mutual love and reguard between
yourselves in this life; but on the Day of Judgement ye
shall disown each other and curse each other: and your
abode will be the Fire, and ye shall have none to help"

As in a few religions, there is only one god. Also,
there is no worship of any other gods allowed. Some
people think that people like money and material things
find those objects as idols. In some ancient religions
you are suppost to worship alot of gods, especially in
Egyptian history. As you can see, the worship of Allah
is the only god that is permitted in this certain
religion and it would be considered very sinful if a
person that was a part of this religion would worship
any other object.

Idol worshipping is not permitted in this religion.
Only one god Allah is to be worshipped, not idols.
Christianity is like this because it is a sin to
worshiop idols. In the Qur'an it asks why worship
something that can not benefit you. Allah is the only
god that can benefit you.

(As for) these, it was not proper for them that they
should have entered them except in fear; they shall meet
with disgrace in this world, and they shall have great

In the previously shown passages we see how important
it is for the Muslims to serve one and only one god,
Allah. We also see how the Qur'an refers back to when
Moses was leading the children of Israel out of bondage
and he went up into the mountains the people built a
golden calf and began to worship it. The Qur'an tells us
that they were wrong-doers and that they will be
remembered and have great chastisement in the hereafter.
The Qur'an makes it known that you must be baptised by
Allah and that there is no other greater than Allah in
baptising. In these passages we see that wordhpping
Allah is very important and that the Muslims believe
that if you do not worship Allah that you will be
remembered and eventually receive great chastisement.

Subject: re: Assignment
In the Islamic religion, worshiping idols or images is
forbidden. Muslim's even have a term for such forbidden
worshipping: shirk. Shirk means that only one god, the
God Allah, is allowed to be worshiping. If one were to
worship another it would be breaking the first pillar of
the Islamic religion. One example of this strong belief
is illustrated in the passage 21.052 where Yusufali
questions those images are being worshiped by saying
"What are these images, to which ye are devoted?". It
is clearly evident that this is a very bad act in which
Allah will punish for. Children are taught very earlier
their Muslim culture which can be seen in the passage
7.139 by stating "Make for us a god as they have their
gods...". These children came across a group of people
in which were worship idols. These children called upon
their god Allah to cleanse these sinning people.
Although it was forbidden to worship idols it was done
as seen in passage 26.71 by saying "We worship idols,
and we remain constantly in attendance on them". Should
this happen, Allah is immediatly called upon to save
depicted in passage 39.017 when it is said "...and turn
to Allah in repentance". It states that those that do
fall into sin must turn to Allah for repentance.
Muslims and their religion are very devoted to their
Five Pillars. Perhaps the most important pillar being
the first which states that idols are forbidden.
Muslims often pray to Allah to save them from comitting
this sin. This is shown in the passage 14.035. Abraham
says, "... [Allah] perserve me and my sons from
serving idols." The Islamic religion is a very strict
religion and what that completely defines a culture.
Part of this is not worshiping idols which is clearly
defined in their holy book the Qu'ran.

022.030 YUSUFALI: Such (is the Pilgrimage): whoever
honours the sacred rites of Allah, for him it is good in
the Sight of his Lord. Lawful to you (for food in
Pilgrimage) are cattle, except those mentioned to you
(as exception): but shun the abomination of idols, and
shun the word that is false,- PICKTHAL: That (is the
command). And whoso magnifieth the sacred things of
Allah, it will be well for him in the sight of his Lord.
The cattle are lawful unto you save that which hath been
told you. So shun the filth of idols, and shun lying
speech, SHAKIR: That (shall be so); and whoever
respects the sacred ordinances of Allah, it is better
for him with his Lord; and the cattle are made lawful
for you, except that which is recited to you, therefore
avoid the uncleanness of the idols and avoid false
words,

022.038 YUSUFALI: Verily Allah will defend (from ill)
those who believe: verily, Allah loveth not any that is
a traitor to faith, or show ingratitude. PICKTHAL: Lo!
Allah defendeth those who are true. Lo! Allah loveth not
each treacherous ingrate. SHAKIR: Surely Allah will
defend those who believe; surely Allah does not love any
one who is unfaithful, ungrateful.

022.041 YUSUFALI: (They are) those who, if We establish
them in the land, establish regular prayer and give
regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with
Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs.
PICKTHAL: Those who, if We give them power in the land,
establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin
kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah's is the sequel
of events. SHAKIR: Those who, should We establish them
in the land, will keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate
and enjoin good and forbid evil; and Allah's is the end
of affairs.

022.062 YUSUFALI: That is because Allah - He is the
Reality; and those besides Him whom they invoke,- they
are but vain Falsehood: verily Allah is He, Most High,
Most Great. PICKTHAL: That is because Allah, He is the
True, and that whereon they call instead of Him, it is
the false, and because Allah, He is the High, the Great.
SHAKIR: That is because Allah is the Truth, and that
what they call upon besides Him-- that is the falsehood,
and because Allah is the High, the Great.

021.052 YUSUFALI: Behold! he said to his father and his
people, "What are these images, to which ye are (so
assiduously) devoted?" PICKTHAL: When he said unto his
father and his folk: What are these images unto which ye
pay devotion? SHAKIR: When he said to his father and
his people: What are these images to whose worship you
cleave?

The Islamic religion has many simliarties to that of
Christanity and Judaism. In the Islamic religion they
are told that it is a sin to worship any idols or
images. Allah is the supreme god in Islam and no other
god is to be worshiped. Allah is referred to as "the
Reality" and all idols are refered to as "falsehoods".
In the Islamic religon Allah is seen as a giving god to
those who worship him. However those who chose to
worship false idols are condemed. It is said that
"Allah will defend those who believe, Allah loveth not
any that is a traitor to faith, or show ingraditude."
It goes on to show in 022.038 that those who have faith
and belive in Allah are rewarded and those who do not
are scorned. In conclusion, we can see that the Islamic
religion is similar in its base to Christanity and
Judaism.

The Qur'an and the Bible seem to say the same thing
about idol worship. The Qur'an finds idol worship or
the worship of any image a sin. It seems that those who
put an idol before Allah will do wrong, but those who
turn away from idol worship will have a good and easy

when Abraham said: My Lord! Make safe this territory,
and preserve me and my sons from serving idols. SHAKIR:
And when Ibrahim said: My Lord! make this city secure,
and save me and my sons from worshipping idols.

All these passages have the same message, that idols are
very bad. The first passage says that those who worship
idols are unbelievers. It calls them minions of the
devil and basically tells the Muslims to fight them. All
of the passages relate the worship of idols to ignorance
and evil. They say that idols are Satan's tool to lead
people astray. This is the way idols are viewed in
Christianity as well. However, the message of the
passages seemed to be that people who worship idols were
on the devil's side, and were lost, while in
Christianity, it is a Christian's duty to help people
turn away from the idols. The overall theme of the
passages was that the worship idols is evil and will
lead a person to Hell.

people who followed Moses began to worship an idol, and
it was wrong. How could they worship something which
could not speak with them, or help them in any way? It
was wrong of them, but Moses had forgotten that this was
the early ways of those people. -(007.173) Because we
are our fathers children, like them in genetics, and
because our fathers were wrong in worshiping other Gods,
will we be punished for their sins? -(007.189) Man and

After reading these passages i found many
similarities to the Bible. While both christianity and
muslim are totally different there passages have some
things in common. The Qur'an states you are to only
worship Allah and no other god. You can only eat certain
animals and others are sacred and not to be eaten. And
you are to fear Allah and treat him with sovernty and
respect. I found the passages very interesting but yet
they are not that different from passages from other
religions.

which they do is vain.

When I read these 5 passages the most important thing
that I found out about Islam is that Muslims believe
that there is only one God. Allah has ordered that there
be no other gods but him and is individual is worshiping
more than one God will be damned for eternity. In their
culture it is also important how and when Muslims
worship God to determinate their position in life and
afterlife. Nothing should come before Allah, it is not
permitted to worship idols nor to eat swine flesh.

could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They
took it for worship and they did wrong.

Ch. 20 (image)

YUSUFALI: "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the
(people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low:
so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses,
but (Moses) has forgotten!"

Ch. 5 (idol)

YUSUFALI: It was not Allah who instituted (superstitions
like those of) a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let
loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for
twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from
work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah;
but most of them lack wisdom.

Ch. 21 (worship)

SHAKIR: When he said to his father and his people: What
are these images to whose worship you cleave?

Ch. 37 (worship)

YUSUFALI: Behold! he said to his father and to his
people, "What is that which ye worship?

YUSUFALI: Those who believe (in the Qur'an), and those
who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians
and the Sabians,- any who believe in Allah and the Last
Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward
with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall
they grieve.

PICKTHAL: (Saying): Serve none but Allah. Lo! I am unto
you from Him a warner and a bringer of good tidings

YUSUFALI: "But Allah has created you and your handwork!"

These five passages from the Qur'an tell us how the
muslim religion views idols and worship. As stated in
the passages above, they are to worship one god only,
Allah. If they worship any other god or idol, they are
damned for eternity. If one were to worship another god,
the Qur'an states that it is like fighting for the
devil. Musilms take very seriously the fact that nothing
should come before Allah; not money, food, possessions,
or family-nothing. The muslim religion is very set in
their beliefs and in reading the Qur'an.

Passages: 007.152-Yusufali- Those who took the calf (for
worship) will indeed be overwhelmed with wrath from
thier Lord, and will shame in this life; thus do we
recompense those who invent (falsehoods).
051.051-Yusufali- And make not another an object to
worship with Allah; I am from him a Warner to you, clear
and open. 007.148-Yusafali- The people of Moses made, in
his absence, out of their ornaments, the image (for
worship) of a calf; it seemed to low: did they not see
that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the
way? They took it for worship and they did wrong.
020.088-Yusafali- "Then he brought out (of fire) before
the people the image of the calf. It seemed to low; so
they said: athis is your god, and the god of Moses, but
(Moses) has forgotten! 005.103-Y- It was not Allah who
instituted (supersititions like those of ) a slit ear
she camel, or a she camel let loose for free pasture, or
idol sacrafices for twin- births in animals, or
stallion-camel freed fro wok. It is for twin-births in
animals, or stallion-camels freed for work. It is
blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah. but most of
them lack wisdom.

The general theme that I get from these passages is that
Muslims believe that there is only one God, and that he
has ordered that there be no other gods but him. And if
images are made and worsipped as a god then the sinners
who have gone against God's commandment will be
punished. Not only that but the one and only God is the
only one who can show the way to the promise land and it
is stupid to worship something that cannot the way to
righteousness.

Yusufali: But those who reject Our signs and treat them
with arrogance, they are companions of the Fire, to
dwell therein (for ever).

Pickthal: But they who deny our revelations and scorn
them- each are rightful owners of the Fire, they will
abide therein.

Yusugfali: Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return
(to the path).

Shakir: Deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they will not turn
back.

Yusufali: To those who believe and do deeds of
righteousness hath Allah promised forgiveness and a
great reward.

It seems as though the Islamic religion is very
important, and to the Muslim people following this
religion is important in determining their afterlife.
The people of this religion must be smart in their
choices made during their life because those who are
"deaf, dumb, or blind" do not return to the path of
righteousness. Also the Muslims must believe in only one
god Allah, similar to the Christians who also only
believe in one god. When it comes to what and who they
worship, Muslims have to focus their beliefs to one
image and not several different ones. Once again,
Christainity, is similar in that only one image and idol
are worshipped. What, how and when Muslims worship is
imortant in determining their afterlife and position in
life.

Dr. Vess, I didn't know if you wanted me to present the
passages I read or not, so I'm just going to give a
summary.

The passages I read said that Allah knows all and all
that his people know is what he teaches them. People
have worshipped things foolishly. They should worship
no one but Allah. The people praise Muhammed, their
messenger of Allah's word.

Message no. 211: posted by student 23 on Mon Feb 26, 2001 16:06
The five passages that I found were on the word idol.
The first of the five passages was about the people who
decided to start worshiping a calf as their idol instead
of Muhammad. The second and third passages were about
serving only one god and not many idols. The fourth and
fifth passages that I found were on the other idols that
people were worshiping rather than just one god.
