We are going to explore the Qur'an and use an online search engine to generate some passages from the Qur'an with the keywords below. Please link to Qur'an search engine and complete the following assignment: Search the Qur'an for the keyword "image," "idol," or "worship." Make a list of at least five passages in which this word occurs and include their content. Post to the bulletin board area of WEBCT a brief essay summarizing the results of your search. You should list the passages and then include your essay as either an attachment or in the body of the posting.
07.148 YUSUFALI: The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong. 04.51 PICKTHAL: Hast thou not seen those unto whom a portion of the Scripture hath been given, how they believe in idols and false deities, and how they say of those (idolaters) who disbelieve: "These are more rightly guided than those who believe"? 004.076 PICKTHAL: Those who believe do battle for the cause of Allah; and those who disbelieve do battle for the cause of idols. So fight the minions of the devil. Lo! the devil's strategy is ever weak. 005.003 PICKTHAL: Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swineflesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye swear by the divining arrows. This is an abomination. This day are those who disbelieve in despair of (ever harming) your religion; so fear them not, fear Me! This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favour unto you, and have chosen for you as religion al-Islam. Whoso is forced by hunger, not by will, to sin: (for him) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. 006.074 YUSUFALI: Lo! Abraham said to his father Azar: "Takest thou idols for gods? For I see thee and thy people in manifest error." The previous portions of the Qur'an tell us a lot about how the religion of Islam views idolatry. Along with Judaism and Christianity, it holds that there is only one true God and that the worship of any other gods is sinful. These verses tell us that those other idols are from the devil, and believers are not even to eat meat that has been slaughtered in sacrifice to idols. Much of this is very similar to the christian Old Testament. In the story of Moses and the Israelites who worship the golden calf, we are told that "they did wrong." Abraham tells his father that he is graely in error when he worships idols. The Qur'an even goes so far as to say that worship of anything other than Allah is fighting for the devil. This shows how they feel about respecting the supremacy of Allah. It is obvious that not placing anything above God is very important to the Islamic religion.
005.103 Yusufali: It was not Allah who instituted a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed frim work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack wisdom. 021.057 Yusufali: "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols- after ye go away and turn your backs" 021.065 Yusufali: Then were they confounded with shame: "Thou knowest full well that these(idols) do not speak!" 029.017 Yusufali: "For ye do worship idols besides Allah, and ye invent falsehood. The things that ye worshop besides Allah have no power to give you sustenance: then seek ye sustenance from Allah, serve Him, and be grateful to Him: to Him will be your return." 029.025 Yusufali: And he said: "For ye have taken idols besides Allah, out of mutual love and reguard between yourselves in this life; but on the Day of Judgement ye shall disown each other and curse each other: and your abode will be the Fire, and ye shall have none to help" As in a few religions, there is only one god. Also, there is no worship of any other gods allowed. Some people think that people like money and material things find those objects as idols. In some ancient religions you are suppost to worship alot of gods, especially in Egyptian history. As you can see, the worship of Allah is the only god that is permitted in this certain religion and it would be considered very sinful if a person that was a part of this religion would worship any other object.
PICKTHAL: Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help. SHAKIR: And Musa's people made of their ornaments a calf after him, a (mere) body, which gave a mooing sound. What! could they not see that it did not speak to them nor guide them m the way? They took it (for worship) and they were unjust. YUSUFALI: "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" PICKTHAL: Who believe in the Unseen, and establish worship, and spend of that We have bestowed upon them; PICKTHAL: O mankind! worship your Lord, Who hath created you and those before you, so that ye may ward off (evil).
Summary The 1st one states that they will only worship one God The 2nd one tells of people worshiping to false idoles and the idole doing nothing for them The 3rd one tells the story of some people begining to think that the image of a calf is their god and the god of Moses The 4th one The 5th one tells the people to worship God because he has created you and protected you from evil.
029.025 YUSUFALI: And he said: "For you, ye have taken (for worship) idols besides Allah, out of mutual love and regard between yourselves in this life; but on the Day of Judgment ye shall disown each other and curse each other: and your abode will be the Fire, and ye shall have none to help." PICKTHAL: He said: Ye have chosen only idols instead of Allah. The love between you is only in the life of the world. Then on the Day of Resurrection ye will deny each other and curse each other, and your abode will be the Fire, and ye will have no helpers. SHAKIR: And he said: You have only taken for yourselves idols besides Allah by way of friendship between you in this world's life, then on the resurrection day some of you shall deny others, and some of you shall curse others, and your abode is the fire, and you shall not have any helpers. 006.162 YUSUFALI: Say: "Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds: PICKTHAL: Say: Lo! my worship and my sacrifice and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the Worlds. SHAKIR: Say. Surely my prayer and my sacrifice and my life and my death are (all) for Allah, the Lord of the worlds; 001.005 YUSUFALI: Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek. PICKTHAL: Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help. SHAKIR: Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help. 003.043 YUSUFALI: "O Mary! worship They Lord devoutly: Prostrate thyself, and bow down (in prayer) with those who bow down." PICKTHAL:O Mary! Be obedient to they Lord, prostrate thyself and bow with those who bow (in worhship). SHAKIR: O Marium! keep to obedience to your Lord and humble yourself, and bow down with those who bow. 003.051 YUSUFALI: "'It is Allah Who is my Lord and your Lord; then worship Him. This is a Way that is straight.'" PICKTHAL: Lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path. SHAKIR: Surely Allah is my Lord and your Lord, therefore serve Him; this is the right path. By reading these 5 passages of the Quran, I could see that the Muslims were very devout in serving their one god--Allah. There was to be nothing put before him. In a way it reminded me of Christianity--God is the only God and there is to be nothing put before Him. Anything and everything is put here on earth with the sole p
21.052 Picktal when he said unto his father and his folk: What are these images unto which ye pay devotion? 21.057 And by Allah I will certainly do something against your idols after you go away turning back. 21.053 They said, "We found our fathers worshipping them." 21.066 He said: Worship ye then istead of Allah that which cannot profit you at all, nor harm you? 21.067 Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense? Idol worshipping is not permitted in this religion. Only one god Allah is to be worshipped, not idols. Christianity is like this because it is a sin to worshiop idols. In the Qur'an it asks why worship something that can not benefit you. Allah is the only god that can benefit you.
001.005 Shakir: Thee do we serve and thee do we beseech for help 002.043 Pickthal: Establish worship pay the poor-due, and bow your heads with those who bow (in woship) 002.138 Shakir: (Receive) the baptism of Allah, and who is better than Allah in baptising? and do we serve 002.092 Pickthal: And Moses came unto you with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), yet, while he was away, ye chose a calf (for wordship) and ye were wrong- doers 002.114 Shakir: And who is more unjust than he who prevents (men) from the masjids of Allah, that His name should be remembered in them, and strives to ruin them? (As for) these, it was not proper for them that they should have entered them except in fear; they shall meet with disgrace in this world, and they shall have great chastisement in the hereafter In the previously shown passages we see how important it is for the Muslims to serve one and only one god, Allah. We also see how the Qur'an refers back to when Moses was leading the children of Israel out of bondage and he went up into the mountains the people built a golden calf and began to worship it. The Qur'an tells us that they were wrong-doers and that they will be remembered and have great chastisement in the hereafter. The Qur'an makes it known that you must be baptised by Allah and that there is no other greater than Allah in baptising. In these passages we see that wordhpping Allah is very important and that the Muslims believe that if you do not worship Allah that you will be remembered and eventually receive great chastisement.
In the Islamic religion, worshiping idols or images is forbidden. Muslim's even have a term for such forbidden worshipping: shirk. Shirk means that only one god, the God Allah, is allowed to be worshiping. If one were to worship another it would be breaking the first pillar of the Islamic religion. One example of this strong belief is illustrated in the passage 21.052 where Yusufali questions those images are being worshiped by saying "What are these images, to which ye are devoted?". It is clearly evident that this is a very bad act in which Allah will punish for. Children are taught very earlier their Muslim culture which can be seen in the passage 7.139 by stating "Make for us a god as they have their gods...". These children came across a group of people in which were worship idols. These children called upon their god Allah to cleanse these sinning people. Although it was forbidden to worship idols it was done as seen in passage 26.71 by saying "We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them". Should this happen, Allah is immediatly called upon to save depicted in passage 39.017 when it is said "...and turn to Allah in repentance". It states that those that do fall into sin must turn to Allah for repentance. Muslims and their religion are very devoted to their Five Pillars. Perhaps the most important pillar being the first which states that idols are forbidden. Muslims often pray to Allah to save them from comitting this sin. This is shown in the passage 14.035. Abraham says, "... [Allah] perserve me and my sons from serving idols." The Islamic religion is a very strict religion and what that completely defines a culture. Part of this is not worshiping idols which is clearly defined in their holy book the Qu'ran.
022.030 YUSUFALI: Such (is the Pilgrimage): whoever honours the sacred rites of Allah, for him it is good in the Sight of his Lord. Lawful to you (for food in Pilgrimage) are cattle, except those mentioned to you (as exception): but shun the abomination of idols, and shun the word that is false,- PICKTHAL: That (is the command). And whoso magnifieth the sacred things of Allah, it will be well for him in the sight of his Lord. The cattle are lawful unto you save that which hath been told you. So shun the filth of idols, and shun lying speech, SHAKIR: That (shall be so); and whoever respects the sacred ordinances of Allah, it is better for him with his Lord; and the cattle are made lawful for you, except that which is recited to you, therefore avoid the uncleanness of the idols and avoid false words, 022.038 YUSUFALI: Verily Allah will defend (from ill) those who believe: verily, Allah loveth not any that is a traitor to faith, or show ingratitude. PICKTHAL: Lo! Allah defendeth those who are true. Lo! Allah loveth not each treacherous ingrate. SHAKIR: Surely Allah will defend those who believe; surely Allah does not love any one who is unfaithful, ungrateful. 022.041 YUSUFALI: (They are) those who, if We establish them in the land, establish regular prayer and give regular charity, enjoin the right and forbid wrong: with Allah rests the end (and decision) of (all) affairs. PICKTHAL: Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish worship and pay the poor-due and enjoin kindness and forbid iniquity. And Allah's is the sequel of events. SHAKIR: Those who, should We establish them in the land, will keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and enjoin good and forbid evil; and Allah's is the end of affairs. 022.062 YUSUFALI: That is because Allah - He is the Reality; and those besides Him whom they invoke,- they are but vain Falsehood: verily Allah is He, Most High, Most Great. PICKTHAL: That is because Allah, He is the True, and that whereon they call instead of Him, it is the false, and because Allah, He is the High, the Great. SHAKIR: That is because Allah is the Truth, and that what they call upon besides Him-- that is the falsehood, and because Allah is the High, the Great. 021.052 YUSUFALI: Behold! he said to his father and his people, "What are these images, to which ye are (so assiduously) devoted?" PICKTHAL: When he said unto his father and his folk: What are these images unto which ye pay devotion? SHAKIR: When he said to his father and his people: What are these images to whose worship you cleave? The Islamic religion has many simliarties to that of Christanity and Judaism. In the Islamic religion they are told that it is a sin to worship any idols or images. Allah is the supreme god in Islam and no other god is to be worshiped. Allah is referred to as "the Reality" and all idols are refered to as "falsehoods". In the Islamic religon Allah is seen as a giving god to those who worship him. However those who chose to worship false idols are condemed. It is said that "Allah will defend those who believe, Allah loveth not any that is a traitor to faith, or show ingraditude." It goes on to show in 022.038 that those who have faith and belive in Allah are rewarded and those who do not are scorned. In conclusion, we can see that the Islamic religion is similar in its base to Christanity and Judaism.
Yusufali: The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that is could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong. Yusufali: "Then he brought out before the people the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but he has forgotten!" Pickthal: Hast thou not seen those unto whom a portion of the Scripture hath been given, how they believe in idols and false deities, and how they say of those who disbelieve: "These are more rightly guided than those who belivev"? Pickthal: Shall I tell thee of a worse case than theirs for retribution with Allah? Worse is the case of him whom Allah hath cursed, him on whom his wrath hath fallen and of whose sort Allah hath turned some to apes and swine, and who serveth idols. Such are in worse plight and further astray from the plain road. Shakir: And as for those who keep off from the worship of the idols and turn to Allah, they shall have good news, therefore give good news to My servants, The Qur'an and the Bible seem to say the same thing about idol worship. The Qur'an finds idol worship or the worship of any image a sin. It seems that those who put an idol before Allah will do wrong, but those who turn away from idol worship will have a good and easy life.
004.076: YUSUFALI: Those who fight in the cause of Allah, and those who reject Faith Fight the cause of Evil: so fight ye against the friends of Satan: feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan. PICKTHAL: Those who do believe do battle for the cause of Allah; and those who disbelieve do battle for the cause of idols. So fight the minions of the devil. Lo! the devil's strategy is ever weak. SHAKIR: Those who believe fight in the way of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the way of the Shaitan. Fight therefore against the friends of the shaitan; surely the strategy of the Shaitan is weak. 006.074 YUSUFALI: Lo! Abraham said to his father Azar: Takest thou idols for gods? For I see thee and thy people in manifest error." PICKTHAL: (Remember) when Abraham said unto his father Azar: "Takest thou idols for gods? Lo! I see thee and thy folk in error manifest ." SHAKIR: And when Ibrahim said dto his sire, Azar: Do you take idols for gods? Surely I see you and your people in mainfest error. 07.138 YUSUFALI: We took the Children of Israel (with safety) across the sea. They came upon a peoplel devoted entirely to some idols they had. They said: "O Moses! fashion for us a god like unto the gods they have." He said: "Surely ye re a people without knowledge." PICKTHAL And we brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a fold who know not. SHAKIR: And we made teh children of Israel to pass the sea; then they came up on a people who kept to the worship of their idols They said: O Musa! make for us a god as they have (their) gods He said: Surely you are a people acting ignorantly. 014.035 yusufali: And they set up (idols) as equal to Allah, to mislead (men) from the Path! Say: "Enjoy (your brief power)! But verily ye are making straightway for Hell!" PICKTHAL: And they set up rivals to Allah that they may mislead (men) from His way. Say: Enjoy life (while ye may) for lo! your journey's end will be Fire. SHAKIR: And they set up equals with Allah that they may lead (people) astray from His path, Say: Enjoy yourselves, for surely your return is to the fire. 014.035 YUSUFALI: Remember Abraham said: "O my Lord! make this city one of peace and security: and preserve me and my sons from worshipping idols. PICKTHAL: And when Abraham said: My Lord! Make safe this territory, and preserve me and my sons from serving idols. SHAKIR: And when Ibrahim said: My Lord! make this city secure, and save me and my sons from worshipping idols. All these passages have the same message, that idols are very bad. The first passage says that those who worship idols are unbelievers. It calls them minions of the devil and basically tells the Muslims to fight them. All of the passages relate the worship of idols to ignorance and evil. They say that idols are Satan's tool to lead people astray. This is the way idols are viewed in Christianity as well. However, the message of the passages seemed to be that people who worship idols were on the devil's side, and were lost, while in Christianity, it is a Christian's duty to help people turn away from the idols. The overall theme of the passages was that the worship idols is evil and will lead a person to Hell.
005.103 Yusufali It was not Allah who instuted (superstitions like those of) a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack wisdom. Meaning: God did not ask these animals to be made so if you don't believe then you don't understand. 007.148 Yusufali The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of a calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, not show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong. Meaning: People believed this was to worship eventhough it did not speak or point the way. 020.088 Yusufali Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgetten! Meaning: The people believed that the god wasn't there. 022.035 Pickthal Whose hearts fear when Allah is mentioned, and the patient of whatever may befall them, and those who establish worship and who spend of that we have bestowed on them. Meaning: Don't be scared of god 002.021 Pickthal O manking! worship your Lord, who hath created you and those before you , so that ye may ward off (evil). Meaning: Believe in God to protect you from the devil.
IDOL: 005.105 YUSUFALI: O ye who believe! Guard your own souls: If ye follow (right) guidance, no hurt can come to you from those who stray. the goal of you all is to Allah: it is He that will show you the truth of all that ye do. 005.116 YUSUFALI: And behold! Allah will say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah'?" He will say: "Glory to Thee! never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, Thou I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden. 005.119 YUSUFALI: Allah will say: "This is a day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are gardens, with rivers flowing beneath,- their eternal Home: Allah well-pleased with them, and they with Allah: That is the great salvation, (the fulfilment of all desires). 005.103 YUSUFALI: It was not Allah who instituted (superstitions like those of) a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack wisdom. PICKTHAL: Allah hath not appointed anything in the nature of a Bahirah or a Sa'ibah or a Wasilah or a Hami, but those who disbelieve invent a lie against Allah. Most of them have no sense. SHAKIR: Allah has not ordained (the making of) a bahirah or a saibah or a wasilah or a hami but those who disbelieve fabricate a lie against Allah, and most of them do not understand. - (005.105)If you are faithful, and stay true to God, then he will reward you with all that you could want -(005.116) God will ask Jesus, “Did you tell my people to worship you and your mother above me, Allah?” and Jesus will say that he did not place himself above God, had he, then Allah would have known of it. -(005.119) If you are truthful, then you are deserving of all the beautiful things God has created, and will be rewarded. -(005.103) God did not create the ideology of idols and it is evil to believe such things. To believe in idols is to believe in a lie, and that is against God. Yet most of whom believe in idols just lack in the knowledge of the correct way. IMAGE: 007.148 YUSUFALI: The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong. 007.173 SHAKIR: Or you should say: Only our fathers associated others (with Allah) before, and we were an offspring after them: Wilt Thou then destroy us for what the vain doers did? 007.189 SHAKIR: He it is Who created you from a single being, and of the same (kind) did He make his mate, that he might incline to her; so when he covers her she bears a light burden, then moves about with it; but when it grows heavy, they both call upon Allah, their Lord: If Thou givest us a good one, we shall certainly be of the grateful ones. 020.088 YUSUFALI: "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" -(007.148 and 20.088) The people who followed Moses began to worship an idol, and it was wrong. How could they worship something which could not speak with them, or help them in any way? It was wrong of them, but Moses had forgotten that this was the early ways of those people. -(007.173) Because we are our fathers children, like them in genetics, and because our fathers were wrong in worshiping other Gods, will we be punished for their sins? -(007.189) Man and woman were made of one being, so that they could produce offspring. But when it becomes difficult for woman to carry a child, or when the child becomes more grown, the parents are to pray to Allah for a healthy and obiedent child. WORSHIP: 001.005 PICKTHAL: Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help. 002.003 PICKTHAL: Who believe in the Unseen, and establish worship, and spend of that We have bestowed upon them; 027.003 PICKTHAL: Who establish worship and pay the poor-due and are sure of the Hereafter. 011.123 SHAKIR: And Allah's is the unseen in the heavens and the earth, and to Him is returned the whole of the affair; therefore serve Him and rely on Him, and your Lord is not heedless of what you do. 022.077 SHAKIR: O you who believe! bow down and prostrate yourselves and serve your Lord, and do good that you may succeed. -(001.115) Worship only God. -(002.003) Whoever believes what they cannot see and is constant in prayer and charity with be blessed. -(027.003) Whoever is faithful in their service to God and who give to the poor are assured of their enterance into heaven. -(011.123) God has control over all that we do not understand and he is the great judge when all is said and done, therefore, be faithful to him and you will be rewarded. -(022.077) Do good and be faithful to God and you will be successful in all that you do.
Yusufali: We have not sent down the Qur'an to thee to be an occasion for thy distress, Pickthal: We have not revealed unto thee this Qur'an that thou shouldst be distressed Shakir: We have not revealed the Qur'an to you that you may be unsuccessful. Yusufali: But only as an admonition to those who fear Allah Pickthal: But as a reminder unto him who feareth Shakir: Nay, it is a reminder to him who fears Yusufali: A revelation frim Him Who created teh eath and the heavens on high Pickthal: A revelation from Him Who created teh earth and the high heavens Shakir: A revelation from Him Who created the earth adn the high heavens. Pickthal: Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe," adnd they will not be tested? Shakir: P ye who believe? fulfill obligations. Lawful unto you are all four footed animals, with the excetptions named: but animals of the chase are forbidden Pickthal: O mankind? fear your Lord for the convulsion of the hour will be a thing terrible After reading these passages i found many similarities to the Bible. While both christianity and muslim are totally different there passages have some things in common. The Qur'an states you are to only worship Allah and no other god. You can only eat certain animals and others are sacred and not to be eaten. And you are to fear Allah and treat him with sovernty and respect. I found the passages very interesting but yet they are not that different from passages from other religions.
005.003 YUSUFALI: Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. PICKTHAL: Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swineflesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols. SHAKIR: Forbidden to you is that which dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that on which any other name than that of Allah has been invoked, and the strangled (animal) and that beaten to death, and that killed by a fall and that killed by being smitten with the horn, and that which wild beasts have eaten, except what you slaughter, and what is sacrificed on stones set up (for idols) and that you divide by the arrows; that is a transgression. This day have those who disbelieve despaired of your religion, so fear them not, and fear Me. This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion; but whoever is compelled by hunger, not inclining willfully to sin, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. 003.017 YUSUFALI: Those who show patience, Firmness and self-control; who are true (in word and deed); who worship devoutly; who spend (in the way of Allah); and who pray for forgiveness in the early hours of the morning. PICKTHAL: The steadfast, and the truthful, and the obedient, those who spend (and hoard not), those who pray for pardon in the watches of the night. SHAKIR: The patient, and the truthful, and the obedient, and those who spend (benevolently) and those who ask forgiveness in the morning times. 006.056 YUSUFALI: Say: "I am forbidden to worship those - others than Allah - whom ye call upon." Say: "I will not follow your wain desires: If I did, I would stray from the path, and be not of the company of those who receive guidance." PICKTHAL: Say: I am forbidden to worship those on whom ye call instead of Allah. Say: I will not follow your desires, for then should I go astray and I should not be of the rightly guided. SHAKIR: Say: I am forbidden to serve those whom you call upon besides Allah. Say: I do not follow your low desires. for then indeed I should have gone astray and I should not be of those who go aright. 017.023 YUSUFALI: Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in thy life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honour. PICKTHAL: Thy Lord hath decreed, that ye worship none save Him, and (that ye show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, say not "Fie" unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word. SHAKIR: And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) "Ugh" nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word. 039.011 YUSUFALI: Say: "Verily, I am commanded to serve Allah with sincere devotion; PICKTHAL: Say (O Muhammad): Lo! I am commanded to worship Allah, making religion pure for Him (only). SHAKIR: Say: I am commanded that I should serve Allah, being sincere to Him in obedience. 021.057 YUSUFALI: "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs".. PICKTHAL: And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs. SHAKIR: And, by Allah! I will certainly do something against your idols after you go away, turning back.
007.148 YUSUFALI: The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong. PICKTHAL: And the folk of Moses, after (he left them), chose a calf (for worship), (made) out of their ornaments, of saffron hue, which gave a lowing sound. Saw they not that it spake not unto them nor guided them to any way? They chose it, and became wrong-doers. SHAKIR: And Musa's people made of their ornaments a calf after him, a (mere) body, which gave a mooing sound. What! could they not see that it did not speak to them nor guide them m the way? They took it (for worship) and they were unjust. 020.088 YUSUFALI: "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" PICKTHAL: Then he produced for them a calf, of saffron hue, which gave forth a lowing sound. And they cried: This is your god and the god of Moses, but he hath forgotten. SHAKIR: So he brought forth for them a calf, a (mere) body, which had a mooing sound, so they said: This is your god and the god of Musa, but he forgot. 014.037 YUSUFALI: "O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in a valley without cultivation, by Thy Sacred House; in order, O our Lord, that they may establish regular Prayer: so fill the hearts of some among men with love towards them, and feed them with fruits: so that they may give thanks. PICKTHAL: Our Lord! Lo! I have settled some of my posterity in an uncultivable valley near unto Thy holy House, our Lord! that they may establish proper worship; so incline some hearts of men that they may yearn toward them, and provide Thou them with fruits in order that they may be thankful. SHAKIR: O our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of some people yearn towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful: 007.139 YUSUFALI: "As to these folk,- the cult they are in is (but) a fragment of a ruin, and vain is the (worship) which they practise." PICKTHAL: Lo! as for these, their way will be destroyed and all that they are doing is in vain. SHAKIR: (As to) these, surely that about which they are shall be brought to naught and that which they do is vain. When I read these 5 passages the most important thing that I found out about Islam is that Muslims believe that there is only one God. Allah has ordered that there be no other gods but him and is individual is worshiping more than one God will be damned for eternity. In their culture it is also important how and when Muslims worship God to determinate their position in life and afterlife. Nothing should come before Allah, it is not permitted to worship idols nor to eat swine flesh.
Ch. 7 (image) YUSUFALI: The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong. Ch. 20 (image) YUSUFALI: "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" Ch. 5 (idol) YUSUFALI: It was not Allah who instituted (superstitions like those of) a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack wisdom. Ch. 21 (worship) SHAKIR: When he said to his father and his people: What are these images to whose worship you cleave? Ch. 37 (worship) YUSUFALI: Behold! he said to his father and to his people, "What is that which ye worship?
PICKTHAL: Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help. PICKTHAL: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, YUSUFALI: Those who believe (in the Qur'an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,- any who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. PICKTHAL: (Saying): Serve none but Allah. Lo! I am unto you from Him a warner and a bringer of good tidings YUSUFALI: "But Allah has created you and your handwork!" These five passages from the Qur'an tell us how the muslim religion views idols and worship. As stated in the passages above, they are to worship one god only, Allah. If they worship any other god or idol, they are damned for eternity. If one were to worship another god, the Qur'an states that it is like fighting for the devil. Musilms take very seriously the fact that nothing should come before Allah; not money, food, possessions, or family-nothing. The muslim religion is very set in their beliefs and in reading the Qur'an.
Passages: 007.152-Yusufali- Those who took the calf (for worship) will indeed be overwhelmed with wrath from thier Lord, and will shame in this life; thus do we recompense those who invent (falsehoods). 051.051-Yusufali- And make not another an object to worship with Allah; I am from him a Warner to you, clear and open. 007.148-Yusafali- The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image (for worship) of a calf; it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong. 020.088-Yusafali- "Then he brought out (of fire) before the people the image of the calf. It seemed to low; so they said: athis is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten! 005.103-Y- It was not Allah who instituted (supersititions like those of ) a slit ear she camel, or a she camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrafices for twin- births in animals, or stallion-camel freed fro wok. It is for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed for work. It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah. but most of them lack wisdom. The general theme that I get from these passages is that Muslims believe that there is only one God, and that he has ordered that there be no other gods but him. And if images are made and worsipped as a god then the sinners who have gone against God's commandment will be punished. Not only that but the one and only God is the only one who can show the way to the promise land and it is stupid to worship something that cannot the way to righteousness.
Yusufali: But those who reject Our signs and treat them with arrogance, they are companions of the Fire, to dwell therein (for ever). Pickthal: But they who deny our revelations and scorn them- each are rightful owners of the Fire, they will abide therein. Yusugfali: Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path). Shakir: Deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they will not turn back. Yusufali: To those who believe and do deeds of righteousness hath Allah promised forgiveness and a great reward. It seems as though the Islamic religion is very important, and to the Muslim people following this religion is important in determining their afterlife. The people of this religion must be smart in their choices made during their life because those who are "deaf, dumb, or blind" do not return to the path of righteousness. Also the Muslims must believe in only one god Allah, similar to the Christians who also only believe in one god. When it comes to what and who they worship, Muslims have to focus their beliefs to one image and not several different ones. Once again, Christainity, is similar in that only one image and idol are worshipped. What, how and when Muslims worship is imortant in determining their afterlife and position in life.
005.103 YUSUFALI: It was not Allah who instituted (superstitions like those of) a slit-ear she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from work: It is blasphemers who invent a lie against Allah; but most of them lack wisdom 007.148 YUSUFALI: The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong.
Dr. Vess, I didn't know if you wanted me to present the passages I read or not, so I'm just going to give a summary. The passages I read said that Allah knows all and all that his people know is what he teaches them. People have worshipped things foolishly. They should worship no one but Allah. The people praise Muhammed, their messenger of Allah's word.
The five passages that I found were on the word idol. The first of the five passages was about the people who decided to start worshiping a calf as their idol instead of Muhammad. The second and third passages were about serving only one god and not many idols. The fourth and fifth passages that I found were on the other idols that people were worshiping rather than just one god.
