Student 5 Exam I Spring 2000The illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen contain many colors. The Cosmic Egg consists of red and orange which are considered consonant colors. Also, it contains the color blue which is a complementary color. The reds and organges equal fire, passion, and warmth. The blue equals motherhood and relaxed sensations. The oval or egg in this painting symbolizes the universe being filled with continual life. The egg is outlined with wavy linea which represent motion and unsettled feelings. This painting also represents the wisdom of God by the use of the egg which is outlined by wavy lines. Yoruba bead work is made up of three major colors. Fun-fun are white and blue colors. These colors represent cold, cool attitudes, and icy climates. Pupa are red, orange, and yellow colors which equal fire, warmth and passion. They also characterize any one with "hot" tempers. Du-du are earth tone colors. These colors consists of greens, browns and blacks. Du-du colors alsosymbolize anyone who is down to earth. The interlacing design that is used to create the many things made from these beads is very important to the meaning of the Yoruba bead work. Interlacing symbolizes the two realms that exist. The physical world which we live in now and the spiritual world which is considered to be home. Music contains many techiniques through which the use of color and line can be presented. Minor tones in music represent low, dark, sad and depressed feeling. An example of minor tones is Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Major tones represent happy, high and bright feelings. An example of major tones in music is Chopin's Harp Etude. Usually, colors such as black and brown can be visualized when listening to minor tones and colors such as yellow and green can be visualized when listening to major tones. Dissonance is another good example of how a piece of music may sound. Music that contains dissoanance is full of motion and changes. Concerto No. 1 is an example of dissonance in music. If one were to connect the dots on the staff paper for Concerto No. 1, they would find many diagonal and wavy lines. Chants correspond to horizontal lines. Horizontal lines are flat and they never change. Chants maintain the same pitch throughout and give a sense of peaceful and restful states of mind. Group II # 1 The Cathedral of Chartres symbolizes the Church. It contains many physical features that make it unique from any other structure. Chartes is hand built and took many years to construct. Chartres, like many other Cathedrals, is full of stained glass windows. These windows serve a huge purpose. On just about every window in Chartres, a story is told. For example, the Blue Virgin Mary is a very famous window that symbolizes the divinity of Mary for giving birth to Chirst. Another reason for having so many windows is to allow light in to "illuninate" the Cathedral. Chartres faces the east because the sun rises in the east. Because Chartres was so big and contained so many windows, flying buttreses were used for support. Flying buttresses kept the Cathedral from collapsing.. As a person enters the Nave, his or her eyes are forced to look upward. This would cause a person to feel very small and insignificant. This is a symbol of how powerful God is and how also important and divine he is. The Labryinth is another important feature of Chartes. The Labryinth contains no dead ends and no matter what path a person takes on it they always end up in the center. The center symbolizes the union of a persons soul with God. Also, the Labryinth is considered as a jorney of hope. Chartres was built to honor the Virgin Mary and to house one of her holy items. The Sancta Camisia is believed by Christians to be the cloak Mary wore. Other sources believe it was worn during annunciation or at the birth of Christ. The foundation of Chartres is in the shape of a crucifix and painted arches are found everywhere on top at the Cathedral. Pointed arches point upward and they symbolize heaven and the mystery of God. The Cathedral of Chartres has many spiritual purposes. Chartres tells the history of Christ and the Virgin Mary. It alsocontains many physical features that symbolize the beliefs of Christians. Chartres serves a function, therefore, it can and should be considered a work of art.
