Gallery Exhibit: Pressed and PulledThis assignment fulfills one of your required performance and/or gallery exhibit writeups. Please complete the questions below and turn them into Dr. Vess on October 22, 2000. Many of the questions require you to apply the materials studied in our units on the elements of art and on functionalism. Think about your responses carefully and try to be as specific as possible in your response. 1. Describe the method(s) used to create a print. If there is more than one medium and method used to create the works in the exhibit, please describe them and given at least one example (work of art) of each.
2. Pick ONE work from the exhibit and analyze its use of color. Discuss the information about this work given to you on the catalog which accompanies the exhibit as well as your own interpretation of how colors contribute to the overall message and affect of the work. Compare this artist's use of color to that of Hildegard of Bingen and the Yoruba, as studied earlier in the course.
3. Pick ONE print from the exhibit and analyze its use of line, shape, and texture. Discuss the information about this work given to you on the catalog which accompanies the exhibit as well as your own interpretation of how the artist's use of line, shape, and texture contribute to the overall message and affect of the print.
4. Pick ONE work from the exhibit which seems to best exemplify the aesthetic of functionalism. Discuss in detail the purpose or function of the work. Use information from the catalog which accompanies the exhibit as well as your own interpretive skills to analyze the print.
5. Do any of these works seem to be used as propaganda to express particular political viewpoints? If so, please explain. If not, please discuss other prominent ideas expressed.
6. The aesthetic of functionalism is only one way of approaching art. Art can also be used to mirror reality or as a form of self-expression, among other things. Are there any works of art in this exhibit which exemplify these ways of appreciating art? If so, please explain. If not, please explain your response further.
7. Which work in the exhibit was your favorite work and why?
