Gallery Critiques

Student 31 Fall 2000

1.) I attended the "Viewers Choice Awards" gallary exhibit. This was a display of Georgia College Student's work . Viewers were asked to vote on their three favorite peices. Among the pieces exhibited were the winner. DaVinci's Cover Girl, which was made of many small magazine clippings, a marble statue. A Contrite Heart, and a paper mache` creation Servent. The artist's names werenotrevealed due to voting.

2.) As you can see from the pieces displayed it was a very diverse exhibit. Each illustrates the aesthetic schools of thought differently. Da Vinci's Cover Girl - is a remake of a da Vinci portrait. Instead of using paint however the artist uses magazine clippings to create the piece. There is an analagous color scheme of red, purple and blue. The texture and material used emphasis this piece as art as self expression. They bring the piece into today making it more modern than its original. The use of magazine clipping also acts to make the viewer conect today's standards of beauty with those in da Vinci's time. A Contrite Heart makes use of smooth texture, fluid rhythm, curved, smooth lines and ovals and circles. These characteristics make the piece calm. It exhibits the quiet, sorrowful emotion of the work because it is expressing a very real human emotion it illustrates realism and functionalism. The piece shows an anonymous person curled up. Because of its title we know this closing off to the rest of the world is due to a sorrowful heart. The ambiguity of the identity of the figure causes it to be an expression of the way we all feel at some time in our lives. Servant also represents functionalism due to the strong emotions it expresses. It is a religious piece depicting Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. The work is made of paper mache` giving it a rough, realistic texture. It uses very natural colors of off white and brown. This too makes it realistic and keep the viewers focus on the meaning behind the work and not on any bright colors or elaborate lines.

3.) I don't belive any of the pieces illustrate art and the ordered cosmos. I was drawn to the works with obvious texture and which touched a chord deep inside me. Da Vinci's Cover Girl made me compare todays standards of beauty as found in magazine in comparison to those in the past. A Contrite Heart put me in touch with my sorrows and times when I just wanted to curl up and ignore the world. Servant exhibits a religious storywhich has great influence on my beliefs. I enjoyed the entire exhibit and was impressed by the quality of work done by Georgia College Students.
