Self-Portrait Assignment (Final Exam Spring and Fall 2000)

During the Spring and Fall 2000 terms, the self-portrait assignment was considerably modified to include a formal written essay worth 60% of the total grade for the project. Students posted their essays in the WEBCT bulletin board area.

The assignment:

During the last several class sessions, we have studied many theories of the self. Hopefully, in so doing you have come to know your own self better and have developed some of your own ideas of what the self is. Write a detailed, well-organized and coherent essay analyzing the various theories of the self we have studied in Freud, Jung, Rilke, art and music of the Romantic era, and Hinduism. Clearly explain how your self-portrait integrates these ideas, and which ones it supports or does not support and how it uses color, line, shape, texture, and other devices to achieve this affect.

You should post your response as an attachment in essay form; your essay should be composed in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect, and should be at least two and one-half double-spaced pages in length. Click on the compose button, then enter a subject line, and then attach your file. You should also attach at least one image of your self-portrait, and you may include more than one image. A digital camera will be available for your use. This is your final exam and must be posted NO LATER than the date of the final.
