1 5/2/00 Over the course of this semester we have learned about various topics. The topics include cultural backgrounds of different ethic groups, music, paintings, psychological perspectives, color, line, and shape. All of these topics have been interesting and captivating to learn about, but for this particular assignment I am going to focus on color, line, shape, Yoruba color aesthetics, and C.G. Jung's psychological perspectives on the self. I am going to describe these topics and tell how each of them relates to my self-portrait and myself.
Next, I would like to focus on color in terms of moods and color in terms of personality. Dark colors such as black, dark blue, and gray all have the same meanings. These dark colors represent death, discomfort, or unprepared. Light colors such as yellow, green, and pink all represent a sense of ease or happiness. In my project I have used two distinctively different colors. I used black to show my discomfort and not being prepared. I also used yellow to display my comfort and happiness. Yoruba color aesthetics help us to understand our personality. There are three different categories in the Yoruban color aesthetics. "Fun fun" is any color including white that is icy, cold, or kind personality. These colors also include turquoise, blue, silver, and crome. "Pupa" encompasses any color that relates to a hot, fiery personality. "Pupa" includes the colors red, dark yellow, orange, and gold. "Du du" colors correspond to down-to-earth, practical, or earthy personalities. "Du du" colors associates with the colors brown and dark green. In my project I have used the colors red and yellow to show my hot-tempered side of my personality. I have also used the color blue to show my calm or relaxed side of my personality. So, my personality, related to the Yoruban color aesthetics, shows a little of the "fun fun" and a little of the "pupa" personality traits. The use of line can also help describe myself. There are five basic uses of line. Vertical lines are used to show stability, unchanging, strong, dependable, or assertive. Horizontal lines represent peaceful, calm, quiet, lazy, gentle, shy, or tender. Diagonal lines are associated with dangerous, moving, dynamic, fun, active, playful, or chaotic. Staccato lines display energetic, nervous, dizzy, musical, disjointed, loud, or jittery. Wavy lines convey feminine, flowing, moving, smooth, peaceful, quiet, soft, or relaxing. In my project I used horizontal and vertical lines to help describe myself. The horizontal lines are used to show my quiet and shy side. It also coveys my discomfort in my life at a particular time period. The vertical lines in my project are used to display the stability in my life at this time. Shapes can take on many meanings in someone's life as well. There are many different shapes and they all have meaning in some sort of way. The circle represents wholeness, the equidistant cross shows relationship, the spiral conveys growth and change, the triangle displays goals or visions, and the square represents stability. In my project I used the square and the cross. The square was used to convey the stability in my life at this particular juncture. The cross was used to relate to the emotional crossroads in my life. This emotional crossroads was caused by the constant moving from place to place, which caused my emotions to stir in all different directions. In conclusion, my project displayed the psychological perspectives of C.G. Jung, and used color, line, and shape to help describe my personality and my moods. I have also used a few items in my project to help describe myself in different ways. I used a sponge to show that I am a person who sits back and absorbs the world around me before jumping into situations. I used a piece of metal to show my stubbornness in most situations. I used leaves to represent that I am always growing physically and mentally. I used rocks to show that I am a person who is always around to talk to, and to show my dependability. I used a lock to show that I am someone who keeps my feelings and emotions locked up for most people. I have used hot tomales to show my hot, fiery temper. The last item I used is a puzzle to convey that I am hard to figure out because of my quietness and lack of expression of my emotions.
