Early Gothic Transitions

The Catherbury Cathedral "Test Arch" (by William of Sens?)  Norman to Gothic!

The following galleries show pictures of two important English cathedrals that exhibit both Norman and Gothic characterisitcs.  The rounded and "dog toothed" arches (above left) are Norman, named after William the Conqueror's home of Normandy in present-day northwestern France.  Much of the south exterior of Canterbury Cathedral is Norman.  The pointed arch (above right) is Gothic.  Look through the following web galleries and note both kinds of arches.  The contrast is striking in St. Alban's; the nave actually exhibits three stages of English architecture: Norman, Early Gothic, and Decorated Gothic.  (The third stage of English Gothic architecture is Perpendicular)
