Sir Thomas Lawrence

1769-1830


Lawrence succeeded Gainsborough and Reynold as the leading portrait painter of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.  He was enormously successful throughout his career.  He was made ARA in 1791 and was appointed painter to the King at Reynolds' death in 1792; in 1794 he was elected RA and in 1820 he became the President.  His reputation spread throughout Europe.
