Sir James Thornhill

(1675-1734)

Thornhill was the only English decorative painter in the Baroque tradition.  While there is no evidence that he met either of his chief rivals Verrio or Laguerre, their grand style influenced his.  His eight grisaille panels illustrating the life of St. Paul ( 1715-17) decorate the famous dome of St. Paul's Cathedral.  Major works are also on display at Greenwich Hospital, Hampton Court Palace, and Blenheim.  He was the father-in-law of William Hogarth.
