GCSU Faculty Web Server User's Guide

Server and Account Information

This page is designed to provide you with more information about using the GCSU Faculty Web Server to publish web pages about your teaching, research and service activities here. This information is for faculty who have applied for and have been given an account on the GCSU Faculty Web Server (FWS).

In order to transfer files to the server, you must be using an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client or an HTML editing program (i.e. Seamonkey, Netscape Composer, Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver, etc.) to upload files to the server.

Think of this as the "nuts & bolts" page. If you have any questions concerning your account or accessing the server please call (478) 445-2520 or contact the webmaster.

NOTE: For step-by-step instructions for your particular FTP or HTML editing software, please refer to the manual or documentation that came with your software.

  • Host Server Name -- www.faculty.de.gcsu.edu or www.faculty.de.gcsu.edu

  • IP Address (use if DNS (Domain Name Server) is unavailable) -- 168.16.213.77

  • Your Username (or userid) -- This should have been sent to you via email from EIS upon approval of your account application. It will normally be a text string consisting of the first letter of your first name plus the first 7 letters of your last name.

    Ex 1: If your name is John Wilkinson your username would be jwilkins
    Ex 2: If your name is Jennifer Smith your username would jsmith


  • Your Password -- This should have been sent to you via email from EIS upon approval of your account application. Passwords are CASE SENSITIVE. This means "Password" is not the same as "password".

  • Filenames -- Filenames -- Filenames are CASE SENSITIVE. This means that "FileName" is not the same as "filename". This means that your URLs must match the case of the filename. Otherwise, the URL will "break" and tell you that the file was not found.

  • Your FTP Directory -- This should have been sent to you via email from EIS upon approval of your account application. Use "www" for your directory.

  • The URL to your default page would be -- http://www.faculty.de.gcsu.edu/~yourusername

    Ex: http://www.faculty.de.gcsu.edu/~jwilkins


  • Your Index Page should have one of the following names:
    • default.htm
    • default.html
    • default.shtml
    • index.htm
    • index.html
    • index.shtml

If you do not have a properly named index file, people who go to your site from the server's directory page at http://www.faculty.de.gcsu.edu/list.html will be told that they do not have permission to access you site.
