Alumni Scholarships at GC&SU for Education Students
All John H. Lounsbury School of Education students are encouraged to complete the financial aid application available from the GC&SU Financial Aid Office (478-445-5149) even if they do not intend to receive financial aid through GC&SU while enrolled.  Some state and national scholarships and other awards are given based on merit and need.  Not having a financial aid application on file could disqualify a student from consideration for these awards.

• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 
• Full-time enrollment for both semesters of the academic year 
McCall Sisters Alumni Scholarship  • Status: rising sophomore to senior, male or female (declared) education major 
• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 
Marvin McTyeire Parks-Ruth Vaden Parks Alumni Scholarship • Status: freshman to senior, male or female, (declared) education majors 
• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

In July at the first meet with the incoming MAT’s, one of the SOE professors explains who is eligible for this award. Those who are eligible and wish to apply must do so by the deadline which is mid-August. Faculty in the SOE review the applications and recommend someone for the scholarship. The recipient is given the money during that school year and is recognized in the SOE honors day ceremony. Former Dean Ed Wolpert meets with the chosen person during our alumni event.

• Other: This scholarship requires that applicants submit, with application, three references, each of which attest that he or she is drug free, law abiding and of high moral character 
Catherine E. Thurston Alumni Scholarship • Status: freshman to senior, male or female, (declared) education major 
• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 
• Full-time enrollment for both semesters of the academic year 
Elizabeth A. Rihm Scholarship The Elizabeth A. Rihm Annual Scholarship is named in honor of Beth Rihm, a special education major from Snellville, Georgia, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident in 2003.  Beth was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and extremely active in sorority philanthropy and in volunteerism the local community. 

Also, the faculty members in the special education program have unanimously approved the establishment of the Beth Rihm Award to be given yearly to the graduating senior in the special education program who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to others through volunteer service in the community.  This award will be presented yearly at the John H. Lounsbury School of Education Honors Convocation beginning spring 2004 and will also be displayed in the department office on a permanent plaque.

The Phi Delta Kappa Chapter 1560 Scholarship (GC&SU)

Phi Delta Kappa is a professional education association dedicated to promoting quality life-long education, with particular emphasis on publicly supported education, as essential to the development and maintenance of a democracy.  Members of the association seek to attain this goal by pursuing the ideals of research, service and leadership. The GC&SU chapter of PDK is Chapter #1560. This chapter chooses to honor a rising GC&SU senior education major each year with a $500 scholarship.

 Notification about the scholarship is sent to each of the junior mentor leaders and published on the student cohort list serve sometime after the first of each year. In order to be considered for the scholarship, students must complete an application form along with the following information:
  • Status: Rising GC&SU senior in education
  • Statement of Recommendation from mentor leader.
  • Transcript of college records (tranguide print-out is ok)
  • 1 - 2 page essay regarding your plans for being an architect of change in our education system.  Essay should be typed and double-spaced.
  • List of leadership, service, and research endeavors, including clubs, organizations, work/service experiences, etc.
A PDK scholarship committee selects a winner based on the quality of the essay and the breadth of research, service, and leadership activities submitted by the student. The scholarship is awarded to the student at the April PDK meeting.

Georgia Higher Education Assistance Corporation State Direct Student Loans (SDSL)  These loans are available to students enrolled in critical fields in education. Contact the Office of Student Financial Aid (478-445-5149) for additional information and application forms. 
The HOPE Teacher Scholarship for Graduate Study in Critical Shortage Fields
(Service-Cancelable Loans for Graduate Students)

The PROMISE Teacher Scholarship (Service-Cancelable Loans for Undergraduate Students)  "The PROMISE Teacher Scholarship, a component of Georgia's HOPE Scholarship Program, provides forgivable loans to students who aspire to be teachers in Georgia public schools. If you commit to teach in a Georgia public school, you will pay less for your education. For a four-year commitment, you can receive up to $6,000 in financial assistance"

Charles McDaniel Teacher Scholarship Be a legal resident of Georgia; 
Be a graduate of a Georgia public high school; 
Be enrolled in a Georgia public college as a full-time undergraduate; 
Be classified as a Junior or Senior level student and admitted to the department of education of the college; 
Have a cumulative grade average of 3.25 or higher; 
Indicate a strong desire to be a teacher.
