In-Class Presentation: Let's Make a Table

In this lesson we'll make a table and add some fun features…

A. Make a basic table with 3 columns and three rows.

    1. Start a new document.
    2. Select TABLE --> INSERT TABLE --> Select 3 columns and 3 rows.
    3. Click Autoformat
    4. Select a format you like. Click Ok
    5. The table appears on your page. Pretty cool, huh? Play around with the autoformat designs until you find one that really suits your needs. It might be that you won't use these special designs very often.

B. Change the background of the top three cells.

    1. Highlight the top three cells of your table.
    2. Select FORMAT --> BORDERS & SHADING --> SHADING TAB --> Change to 20% shading.
    3. Now that you're here, try some of the other features in borders and shading.
    4. Can you change the width of the table's borders? (Hint: Format - Borders & Shading - Borders Tab…you take it from here. Just remember to highlight the cells, rows, or column you want to change FIRST!)

C. Add an extra row and then delete it…

D. Type in some text in each of the top cells, center the text within the cell.

  1. Type in the text, highlight the cells you want to center, click the justification button on the toolbar.
  2. On the next row of cells, do the same thing except use the left justification.
  3. On the third line, use the right justification.
  4. Remember, if you want to change text, highlight it, and then apply BOLDING, UNDERLINING, ITALICS, or font changes.
