Ocmulgee River Landings

Old Water Works

Description

This is the site of the old Macon water works, which was damaged during Tropical Storm Alberto in 1994.  After that, the Macon-Bibb County Water and Sewage Authority elected to move the water treatment facility across the river to Jones County onto higher ground.  The dedicated work of several important volunteers helped local planners and elected officials to recognize the opportunity to preserve this land in the public good as a river access park, and once funding is secured, the designs for this facility look very promising.  For now, however, the land is gated and posted.  You can get a glimpse of the plans at New Town Macon.

Directions

From the Pierce Ave. exit on Interstate 75, turn southeast onto River Road.  You might be able to find this by following the signs to Days Inn.  It's kind of hidden on the southeast side of the bridge where I-75 goes over the entrance/exit ramps.  Take the road straight back about three blocks and over the railroad crossing.  Turn right and the future park will be on your left.
