COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

This course examines major events and developments in an ever more interdependent world. Under consideration will be the role of the United States in the changing international system, the foreign policy making process and the altered place of the nation-state in the world arena. The cultural and ethnic composition of the societies under consideration will be examined in an interdisciplinary matrix.

Attendance Policy

Students are responsible for all material whether they are present or not. In the event of illness, family emergency or school authorized activity, a student will be allowed to make up work only if a written excuse is presented. Excuses for illness must be written by a physician or the infirmary.

General Instructions:

 

1. Reading assignments or Exercises from the text are due on the indicated dates .

2. Class participation and discussion will be graded.

3. A significant part of your grade will be related to a project and

portfolio. A separate instruction sheet will be provided. A sign up list

for in class presentations will be provided.

4. No food or use of tobacco is allowed in class

Separate instructions will be provided for project, paper and internet assignments. Maps, experiential exercises and films will also be utilized during the class. All assignments will be collected in a notebook to be submitted at semester's end.

 

Most Internet assignments may be accessed through the Global Issues Website and are due on each Thursday. Additional directions for internet assignments will be given in class before each one is due.

Seitz : Assignment : Using the text and the internet for additional information , from Appendix 3 answer one question for each chapter in 1-2 pp. Assignments due each Thursday.

 

Barney: pp 78-105 Using the questions beginning on page 83 . Answer Question 1 utilizing your own religion. Use any of the world's faiths to answer questions 2,3,and 4. i.e Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Native American, Traditional African , etc.You may also use an ethical system such as Confucianism. Not less than five pages

Nations

Using the CIA World Factbook list the ten wealthiest and 10 poorest nations. On which continents are the rich nations located? The poor ?

 

Jan. 27 Seitz 2.Population

Look at Dr.Alderman's Population maps . What connection can you find between the maps and the richest and poorest nations? Go to the Demography and Population site? What is demography? Note the links to area and country study Vls. ( Virtual Libraries)

Feb. 3 Seitz 3.Food

Global Economics : Go to Relief Web: Locate: Complex Emergences.

Choose a country and write one page on the issues requiring relief. Be prepared to discuss in class.

 

Feb. 10 Seitz 4. Energy

Go to www.opec.org . What is the Significance of OPEC to global energy? Which country is most significant to the organization and why?

 

Feb. 17 Seitz 5.Environment

Go to Environment :IDST Global Issues World Earth Summit on Rainforests Simulation Project. Follow the directions on the site.

March 9 Seitz 6. Technology

 

Using the sections on Governance, Conflict, and Electronic news select a country. How is it governed? Is it currently involved in conflict? If so ,why? If not, when was the last conflict? Why? Can you see a connection between the form of government and the type of conflict?

Take notes as a basis for class discussion.
