Threads of Life: The Textile Arts in World Culture

Now that you have studied the history of weaving with Professor Wylly, you may want to explore the textile arts in the world's cultures through the links below. For what weaving products is Asia most well-known? Turkey? Native American cultures? Scotland? What role does weaving play in these cultures and for what are these products used? How did the loom influence the evolution of computers? Finally, read the myths in the last section. What special roles does weaving play in these myths? What does weaving symbolize? Why do you think weaving has been used by so many cultures to symbolize the path of life? Why did your instructor title this unit "Threads of Life"?
