HIST 4285 is a survey of the major intellectual and cultural trends in Europe since 1500 C.E. Our overall theme for the course is "Protest, Reform, and Revolution," and we will see how this theme is played out in the many evolutions in the intellectual history of this era. Our course will also examine the impact of ideas on the social, political, and economic revolutions of the era. We will study broad trends in art, literature, music, philosophy, the social sciences, including political science and psychology, the sciences, mathematics, and other disciplines, and examine the historiography of the early modern and modern era. We will journey from the Italian Renaissance to the technological society of the twentieth century. It is my hope that each of you will discover something about the world in which we live, and something about the origins of your major presuppositions about the world and your place in it. This WWW site is intended for use in conjunction with your course handouts and readings.
