Dr. Vess's performancesOkay, so I am no Rubinstein or Ashkenazy, but just a former paino performance major. Listen with a grain of salt, okay? And as long as I am loading these files for public listening, let me take the opportunity to dedicate them to my beloved teacher Mrs. Betty Lief Sims of Dallas, Texas, who showed me that playing the piano was so much more than just "playing the piano." I only wish she were still alive so that I could thank her for introducing me to an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge. Mrs. Sims, you're still my hero. I would also like to thank my teacher in college, Dr. Steven Smith of The Pennsylvania State University, under whose direction I learned and performed these pieces. I tried his patience on many an occassion (and I won't mention my side!), but he was a wonderful and inspiring teacher who taught me a lot. And now, for mom and dad, who wonder what I am doing with my "talent" these days after "all that money they spent" for piano lessons. Well, I am digitizing twelve-year old performances, mom, and streaming them over the net. So there you have it. If you like, please e-mail my mom and tell her it was worth it if you liked these tapes. Seriously, thank you mom for driving me to all those lessons, waiting endlessly for me to come out, and for funding all those years of study. I guess I should also thank you for listening to the four hours of practice every day. I am getting paid back, as my son is playing the drums. Does that help? Now all of this was said tongue-in-cheek, departs from the serious tone of the rest of this site, and is now over. Enjoy what's here. Site still under construction. Be patient. Many thanks to Dr. Frank Lowney for his help in digitizing these tapes. Chopin: Concerto in F Minor, first movement. Dr. Vess's performance with the Penn State Symphony Orchestra in 1984. If I could redo this one, I would play it slower. Comes with age, I guess. This is a quictkime movie file.
