Magistra is a daughter publication of Vox Benedictina, a Canadian journal of monastic and women's spirituality, edited by Margot King and published by Peregrina Publishing Company. In 1994, Vox Benedictina ceased publication after a ten-year long run. The tremendous contributions of Vox Benedictina inspired Deborah Vess and Sister Judith Sutera, who served as joint editors of VB, to continue the spiritual and scholarly work begun by Dr. King. Magistra: A Journal of Women's Spirituality in History, focuses on "feminine" spirituality as understood in a broad sense, practiced by women or by men within a variety of religious traditions. Although the emphasis of the journal has been on Christian and monastic spirituality, the editorial board welcomes articles on a variety of spiritual traditions, including those of the east and Middle East. Articles make original contributions to the scholarly literature, and are of the high quality one has come to associate with Jo Ann McNamara, Roger Corless, John Crean, and other well-known names in the field. Articles in Magistra are presented in a highly readable style, which is accessible to a wide variety of readers from interested lay people to professional scholars.
Magistra is a refereed journal and is published
semi-annually, in July and in December. Vol. I no. 1 was published in July
1995. Vol. III no. 1 is the most recently published issue. Each issue is
approximately 200 pages.
Magistra publishes original articles and new translations and book reviews of texts by or about women and their spirituality, from any period of history and any faith. Those submitting translations are responsible for obtaining copyright permission from the source and should provide bibliographical information about the author. Manuscripts should not exceed thirty double-spaced pages. The editors take no responsibility for unsolicited manuscripts. Copies of new books in relevant areas are also welcomed for review.
Annual subscriptions to the journal are $20 (USD)
for individuals, $30 (USD) for institutions, and $35 (USD) for those outside
of the United States. Send all inquiries, submissions, and subscriptions
