The Gospels (The Life of Jesus)

Source: Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces, expanded edition in one vol), ed. Maynard Mack, 1997 & lectures from grad school

Jesus = Greek form of Joshua = savior (all gospels in Greek)

Birth of Jesus – different in different accounts (written at various times – gospels by 100 CE; NT codified 367 CE)

Matthew: written for Jewish audience to prove Jesus is legitimate heir to the House of David

Need knowledge of Judaism to fully interpret text

Shows plan/harmony – not chance or human choice

Abraham -- David --Jesus (14 generations betw each)

Fulfillment of Biblical prophets (Isaiah, Micah, Hosaiah, Jeremiah)

Predetermined – dreams important (foretell; show destiny)

Heavens / stars also foretell events, proclaim birth

MEN dominate action of story (Joseph not Mary important)

Luke: written for Greek, urban audience

Compares, contrasts 2 babies (John Baptist & Jesus)

Both unbelievable (one too old, one a virgin)

Old order (Eliz./JB) -- New order (Mary & Jesus)

     Past/Old order        Future/Youth/New Order

Mary very faithful  -- Jesus faithful, believing, hidden, quiet

Good news – for humble shepherds, NOT temple & court

Jesus to work for humble, not courts/powerful

Who visits Jesus after birth?

In Matthew: 3 kings w/ gifts (king of kings)

In Luke: humble shepherds (messiah for humble/poor)

Keyed into women’s feelings (sensitive to / interested in)

Human interest story

Individuals, incidentals key rather than dreams

People have fears / interests / reactions (not just prophecy)

Jesus as NEW ADAM rather than NEW ABRAHAM
