FINAL EXAM – Fall 2004 – IDST 2315 – Magoulick

·  DUE by noon on Tuesday December 7 (in my office A&S 3-21 or my mailbox A&S 3-03)

·  No late tests accepted for any reason. Turn it in early if there is any doubt about being on time.

·  Please type all answers in double-spaced, standard academic format; spelling & grammar count.

·  Do not work in groups or copy. Consider this like other paper assignments. Do your own work.

·  You may use your books and notes, though anything copied must be quoted & cited properly.

·  You should turn in a printed-out copy (not an electronic submission) on or before the due date.

NOTE: DO NOT COPY INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNET without properly citing it (this would be cheating and will result in automatic failure in the entire course). You need not do any outside research, but if you copy ANY information (including ideas and information – not just direct quotes) from the internet or elsewhere, YOU MUST give proper CITATIONS! Even if you look at a painting from an internet source to discuss it, listen to or look up music, or look up information about an author, you must cite the source (the URL, page number, etc.) of the any websites or other sources you use.

PART II  [75 points]Develop a thoughtful, thorough, persuasive essay to discuss your answer to one of the following questions. Be sure to make your answer an argument (with a thesis) that you prove using specific examples including analyzed quotes from readings and possibly relevant art & history from class.    Rec. Length: 600-800 words

  1. Compare and contrast the power and impact of any two women in two different readings from the semester. How does being a woman affect her insight, experience, power, and effectiveness (in each of the readings you select)? Why might the writer have chosen to make these women characters so strong, especially given their circumstances? Make your answer a thoughtful argument with specific textual evidence to prove your point.

OR

  1. Discuss the cause, significance, and impact of poverty in the lives of characters from any two of our readings. How (specifically) does poverty influence their lives positively or negatively? Why might the author have chosen to use this as a major theme in the work? Make your answer a thoughtful argument with specific textual evidence to prove your point.
