Short Essay or iMovie Assignment
OPTION ONE: EXPOSITORY ESSAY
Length: 4 to 6 pages, standard font and type size
File Type: Microsoft Word File ONLY. Note: I cannot grade your essay if it is any other type of file.
Due Date: See Course Syllabus
Method of Submission: WebCT Email Attachment Only. No Paper, Please!
Topic: Intentional Community. Find an intentional community (i.e., modern day utopian experiment), a cult, or some related phenomenon and write an essay about it. Explain what its founding principles are, how it is organized, how it operates on a daily basis, etc. Use internet resources to find your topic, but be very cautious about internet sources for the documentation of your paper.
Document your paper thoroughly using MLA in-text references and NOT footnotes. You should be learning about this in English Comp.
After you submit your essay to me as an email attachment on WebCT--NOT on the faculty email server, I will grade it using Microsoft Word comment boxes and track editing. I will then send it back to you for revision. THE REVISION OF YOUR ESSAY IS REQUIRED. You will resubmit your revised essay, which I will then re-evaluate and return to you. You can edit your essay as often as you like until the end of the semester.
Name your document file as follows: last name_first name-1, for example: jones_robert_1. I will grade, rename, and return it thus: jones_robert_2. You revise, rename, and return it to me: jones_robert_3. And so forth for as long as you wish until the end of the semester.
I will adjust your grade with each revision, and your final grade for the essay will reflect the quality of your final revised piece.
If you need more time to complete your essay, formally request an extension via WebCT email. Late papers will be penalized five points per day deducted from the final grade.

OPTION TWO: COLLABORATIVE iMOVIE
This option requires that you form a team of no more than three students and work collaboratively to produce an iMovie on the same topic as OPTION ONE. Instead of a paper, however, you will produce a documentary film in the form of either an iMovie or an Enhanced Podcast, which I will then "podcast" to the Utopia Channel. If you are interested in pursuing OPTION TWO, please see me immediately so I can help you get started.
