Amiens Cathedral, France

Amiens Cathedral Project is a truly remarkable website developed by Columbia University.  You can spend hours viewing every angle of the exterior and interior of this grand French cathedral. There are also cumputer generated graphics, engineering specs, quicktime movies, and much more.

Canterbury Cathedral

Canterbury Cathedral is one of the most celebrated cathedrals in Britain.  The destination of Chaucer's famous pilgrims, Canterbury is the site of the shrine to St. Thomas a Becket located on the spot where he was slain by assasins sent by the King. The Unofficial Canterbury Website contains many images and much informative text. The On-Line Guide to Canterbury shows much of the town as well as the cathedral. Finally, the archeological website tells the interesting story of the recent discovery of a large Saxon Cathedral concealed for many centuries beneath the floors stones of the Medieval structure.

Chartres Cathedral, France

Chartres Cathedral is a truly remarkable Gothic structure.  Chartres Website  well worth exploring has a point and click gallery for the carthedral as well as links to many other periods and styles of art and architecture.

Durham Cathedral (Door Knocker)

Durham Cathedral in Northern England is the burial place of the Venerable Bede, the father of English scholarship.  Beginning with the giant knocker on the main door (above),  follow a keyed floorplan of the cathedral and go on a virtual tour.

Ely Cathedral

Ely Cathedral is perhaps my personal favorite of British cathedrals.  The famous lantern is one of the great mysteries of medieval engineering.

Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury Cathedral, located in the same region as Stonehenge, has the highest tower in England and the oldest clock in Europe.  See also, The Salisbury Project!

Westminster Abbey

The Westminster Abbey Home Page is and interesting example of a page that mixes history with business and shows very clearly that cathedrals, gothic and otherwise, are meant for use, not just exhibition.

Winchester Cathedral

Winchester Cathedral is a fine specimen or early English Gothic architexcture.

York Minster

York Minster, usually referred to as "The Minster," is perhaps the premiere Gothic cathedral in Great Britain.  This website features a complete plan of the cathedral as well as a virtual tour with many images.
