William Kent

(1685-1748)

Kent's Designs of Inigo Jones (1727), sponsored by Boyle, was very influential, along with Robert Castell's The Villas the of Ancient Illustrated (1728).  Indeed the Roman villa was the chief architectural form adopted by the Neo-Palladians.  It embodies the noble, learned, classical tradition of rural retirement expressed in the works of Horace and Virgil, as well as imitators and followers in the eighteenth century like Pope.
